Sponsor Spotlight Summary – McCarter Grespan Lawyers
Attendees at our April 29th breakfast had the opportunity to learn more about our corporate sponsor McCarter Grespan Beynon Weir PC.
Tom Beynon introduced his company, a Kitchener-based boutique law firm that has served local family business people for over 25 years. McCarter Grespan’s team of experienced lawyers provide practical, business-oriented advice for next-generation planning, corporate governance, shareholder rights and agreements, buying/selling businesses, corporate finance, contracts, licensing, and joint ventures.
Tom talked about his commitment to mentoring local business enthusiasts.
Tom also shared some personal stories, including a couple of stories about his professional football career…[while Tom didn’t get into details, he had a remarkable football career, playing on three Grey Cup Championship teams – Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1966 and Ottawa Rough Riders in 1968 & 1969].
Tom’s football career taught him important lessons which he has put to use throughout his successful legal career…in Tom’s own words:
“The Football Metaphor,
I think there are lessons learned in football that apply to business, and here are some of the elements:
- Hire really good people, average people do average things
- Hire really good leaders that have the ability to make good people great
- Know your strengths, know your weaknesses
- Know who your competitors are, and know their strengths and weaknesses
- Prepare a game plan to beat your competitors and to score, good plans and team commitment to the plan, often provide good results; if you don’t plan for victory, you are unlikely to achieve it
- Winning is everything, there is no plan for losing
- Don’t be discouraged by a bad first quarter, rally the team, that is why the game is 60 minutes.”
