SUMMARY:Mini Class - Governance in Family Business
DESCRIPTION:✨ Working Luncheon \nGovernance in a family enterprise is far more than legal documents and formal board meetings. At its core\, it’s about aligning the three interconnected systems that shape your long‑term success: \n\nYour Family\nYour Ownership Group\nYour Business\n\nWhen these systems drift out of sync\, what looks like a personal conflict is often a structural misalignment. This introductory luncheon brings clarity to those hidden dynamics and offers a practical\, accessible framework for strengthening your enterprise from the inside out. \nWhat We’ll Explore \n\nHow to create open\, productive dialogue across generations\nWays to coordinate expectations among family members\, owners\, and leaders\nThe foundational structures every family business should establish before formal legal agreements are drafted\nHow family dynamics intersect with corporate frameworks—and how to keep both healthy\n\nWho Should Attend \nWhether you’re: \n\nA founder navigating succession\nA next‑generation leader preparing to step into responsibility\nAn owner seeking clarity around roles\, rights\, and decision‑making\n\n…you’ll walk away with a grounded understanding of how governance supports continuity\, reduces conflict\, and builds resilience across generations. \n️ Why This Session Matters \nThis luncheon is the launch point for our in‑depth Fall Governance Series\, designed to help families move from insight to implementation. Attending this session ensures you begin with a shared language\, a clear framework\, and a stronger foundation for the conversations ahead. \n  \nThis session is made possible through the support of McCarter Grespan\, with opening remarks from Amy Finch\, who will introduce the theme of governance and set the context for the conversation ahead. Amy’s introduction will lead into insights from our featured speakers: \n👤 Meet Our Presenters \nAmy Finch \nAmy Finch is a Director at McCarter & Grespan and Chair of the firm’s Wills and Estate Planning Practice Group. Her practice spans corporate\, commercial\, and business law\, with deep expertise in mergers and acquisitions\, succession and estate planning\, complex reorganizations\, restructurings\, private placements\, and corporate financings.\nMcCarter & Grespan has long supported CFFB and champions early governance education. Amy will share why the firm views governance training as a vital investment for family enterprises of all sizes. \nVivian Zochowski \nVivian Zochowski trained as a lawyer and built a successful corporate career in finance\, estate planning\, and related fields. In retirement\, she continues to lend her leadership and governance expertise to numerous not‑for‑profit organizations.\nVivian will introduce the core “circles of influence” that shape governance in a family enterprise and highlight key themes to watch for throughout the session. \nSandra Hanmer \nSandra Hanmer brings a distinguished career across corporate and not‑for‑profit leadership\, with extensive experience in the health\, social services\, and disability sectors locally\, provincially\, and nationally. She has also served as a health‑care executive in New Zealand and currently sits as a Waterloo City Councillor and Executive in Residence at Capacity Canada.\nSandra has guided many organizations in building strong governance foundations. She will outline the essential building blocks to focus on as you begin—or strengthen—your governance journey.

SUMMARY:CFFB Annual General Meeting with Speaker Neil Thornton
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to welcoming members to our Annual General Meeting this September\, bringing members together to reflect on our accomplishments\, strengthen community connections\, and discuss the year ahead. \nLead Change with a Strategic Plan that Actually Works with Neil Thornton | Hint: The Planning is Easy\, the ‘Doing’ is the Hard Part \nStrategic planning should be more than an annual retreat\, a complicated document or a set of ambitious statements that rarely influence daily decisions. In today’s rapidly changing business environment\, organizations require a clear and compelling set of goals and vision that moves people beyond short-term problem-solving and reactionary thinking. This keynote explores how leaders can establish an honest picture of their current reality\, define what they want to create and translate their focus into meaningful priorities that people throughout the organization can understand\, support and act upon. \nDrawing on proven strategies from the trenches of experience\, participants will learn the essential elements of an effective and practical strategic plan: what\, why\, how\, when and who. The presentation will examine how to establish measurable goals\, determine strategic actions and timelines\, assign champions\, engage employees and create a culture of accountability. Most importantly\, participants will discover how leadership presence\, communication and influence can bring a strategic plan to life—moving it beyond the boardroom and turning vision into coordinated action\, measurable progress and sustainable results. \nObjectives: \n\nUnderstand the three key questions for any planning process\nApply the Balanced Scorecard approach (Kaplan) with 5 key priorities\nUnderstand the strategic planning is easy; it’s the ‘doing’ that is the hard part\nEnsure fingerprints are on the planning process at every level of the organization\nEngaging people in the process through vision\, mission\, and values\nSpeaking and coaching skills required\nRemember that your culture will eat your strategic plan for breakfast!
